Four Elements for finding what works on-farm

Farmers make hundreds of decisions each season, often with incomplete information and considerable uncertainty. Whether evaluating a new technology, refining an existing practice, or responding to changing conditions, there is rarely a single source of information that provides a complete answer.

Too often, agricultural decisions rely on only one type of evidence. Research findings may not reflect commercial farm conditions. Observations from a single farm may not apply elsewhere. Data can reveal patterns but not necessarily explain them. Experiments can demonstrate differences but may not explain why they occur. Even the best results have limited impact if they are not shared and discussed.

At ARC, we believe that understanding what works on-farm requires multiple sources of knowledge working together. We use four complementary elements – Explain, Evidence, Experiment and Exchange – to structure projects, develop understanding and generate practical knowledge.

The four elements are not a rigid process. They reinforce one another and can occur simultaneously. A shared explanation helps identify what should be measured. Evidence helps generate hypotheses for experiments. Experiments strengthen the evidence base. Exchange challenges assumptions, shares learning and often generates the next set of questions.

Together, the four Es provide a practical framework for helping farmers, researchers, advisors and technology providers develop knowledge that supports better-informed decisions and continuous improvement.

Explanations

Effective on-farm research starts with a clear question and a shared understanding of the system. By involving farmers and stakeholders early, we build explanatory frameworks that connect the local farming context with existing knowledge, helping to clarify what matters, what’s known, what to measure and what to test.

Evidence

By sharing relevant farm data, making meaningful measurements, and combining these with soil, weather, and satellite-derived datasets, we enable benchmarking and analytics that help farmers compare performance, build shared insight, and develop hypotheses about what works on-farm that can then be tested in experiments.

Experimentation

To understand if something works we need fair comparisons- ideally replicated within and across farms. Field variability makes this challenging, but with good design and the right tools, robust trials are possible. The ARC Farm Trials Tool coordinates experiments using satellite imagery to place and monitor trials. Robust statistics can be applied to yield map data.

Exchange

real progress depends on listening. Capturing farmers’ experiences, feedback, and ideas is essential — not just for sharing results, but for shaping the direction of research and innovation. We help bring together tools like FarmPEP and support facilitation through groups like BOFIN to enable meaningful exchange and distil shared knowledge nuggets.
